Estimate how much you could have saved at retirement and the monthly income it could provide.

How the calculation works

Your savings and monthly contributions grow at the return you expect until retirement. The balance is then spread over your retirement years, earning a (usually lower) return, to estimate a sustainable monthly income. Values are also shown in today’s money after inflation.

Formula used

Savings at retirement = S × (1 + r)ⁿ + C × ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r; Income = Savings × r₂ ÷ (1 − (1 + r₂)^−m)

Example

At 35 with $50,000 saved, $800 a month, 6% growth and retirement at 65, you would have about $1,104,741, which could pay about $5,831 a month until age 90.

Frequently asked questions

Is this guaranteed?

No. Returns, inflation and spending change over time. This is an estimate only.

Why show today’s money?

Prices rise over time, so a future amount buys less than the same amount today.
