Estimate your body fat percentage from tape measurements using the U.S. Navy method.

How the calculation works

The Navy method uses your height, neck and waist (and hip for women) to estimate body fat. Measure around the neck below the larynx and around the waist at the navel, relaxed and not pulled tight.

Formula used

Men: 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log₁₀(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(height)) − 450 (measurements in cm)

Example

A man who is 178 cm tall with a 38 cm neck and 86 cm waist has about 17% body fat, which is in the ‘fitness’ range.

Frequently asked questions
